Women Tech Council (WTC), a US organisation that’s working towards increasing the number of women in technology, has announced its 2020 Shatter List, to celebrate International Women’s Day today.
The list showcases firms in the tech industry that are ‘shattering’ the glass ceiling by helping to accelerate and promote women in their organisations.
Now in its third year, The Shatter List is the ‘first and only research’ of its kind for technology and innovation companies, according to WTC. Moving beyond hiring or HR measures, the list ‘rates’ the development and successful implementation of holistic, organisation-wide practices to create inclusive cultures where women can contribute and succeed, it adds.
“The Shatter List represents meaningful recognition of the technology organizations that are actively engaged in helping advance women at every level of organisational success, and amplification of their impactful practices,” stated WTC’s President Cydni Tetro. “This type of research and dissemination helps advance women throughout the technology industry by demonstrating the power and impact of high-performing teams built on gender inclusion, and the practices that create them.”
RIGOROUS EVALUATION
The 2020 Shatter List was compiled by evaluating data from more than 10 different sources to demonstrate how successfully firms are helping to break the glass ceiling for women in tech. Companies also had to show how their commitment and activities across four specific areas are helping to advance women in tech at all levels of the company – from entry level to executive, confirmed WTC.
The four key areas that firms were evaluated on:
- Executive engagement (active support from the CEO, executive team and all leadership).
- Company programming (currently has women in leadership executive positions and proactively implements programmes to support women in technology).
- Community investment (active participation with the broader community to learn from and share best practices regarding culture and inclusion).
- Women’s or Diversity and Inclusion group (formal programmes to support women internally).
