World Aids Day

The first day of December marks World AIDS Day, when LGBTQ+ organisations like myGwork and charities worldwide raise awareness of the HIV epidemic and the stories of people living with HIV & AIDS.

National AIDS Trust, for example, is committed to stopping new cases of HIV, securing the rights of people living with HIV, and fighting HIV stigma and discrimination. Today over 105,000 people live with HIV in the UK alone. Yet recent research from National AIDS Trust found that 63% of the public do not remember seeing or hearing about HIV in the past six months. Only a third said they have sympathy for people living with HIV regardless of how they acquired it.

The survey also found 1 in 5 think people think you can acquire HIV through kissing. Only 16% knew if someone is on effective treatment, they can’t pass HIV on and can expect to live a long and healthy life.

World AIDS Day is the perfect time to raise much needed awareness about HIV, especially in workplaces. myGwork, the business platform for LGBTQ+ employees, will host a panel on World AIDS Day panel. The panel, sponsored by HCA Healthcare, will feature people living with HIV, people working in the HIV sector, and professionals who work to ensure that their workplaces are inclusive of people with HIV, to find out more. The panellists will discuss the incredible progress that has been made so far, and what needs to be done to help people living with HIV & AIDS feel supported both in society and in the workplace. Click here to find out more.
