The latest survey from myGwork, reveals that 80% of LGBTQ+ students and graduates are more likely to accept a job offer if they see visible allies and LGBTQ+ role models in leadership positions.
However, companies with leadership teams that don’t reflect the diversity of their workforce risk losing a significant talent pool. According to the research nearly one-third of students and recent graduates identify as LGBTQ+, highlighting the importance for employers to prioritise authentic inclusion and diversity. For Gen Z, authenticity is non-negotiable.
AUTHENTICITY MATTERS
The message is clear: authenticity is not just appreciated – it’s expected. LGBTQ+ role models and allies in visible positions are vital in making workplaces feel inclusive and welcoming. Without them, many Gen Z job seekers may walk away.
The stakes are even higher when considering workplace culture. Three-quarters of LGBTQ+ job seekers hesitate to join companies where they fear they can’t be their true selves. Gen Z demands workplaces where they feel safe from bias, discrimination, and are provided opportunities for growth.
DISCRIMINATION CHALLENGES
Unfortunately, discrimination is still a prevalent concern. According to the myGwork survey, 48% of LGBTQ+ students and graduates have witnessed discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity in their academic or work environments – compared to just 32% of their non-LGBTQ+ peers. Additionally, 36% of LGBTQ+ respondents reported personally experiencing discrimination, such as homophobia, biphobia, or transphobia.
This underlines the urgent need for companies to take strong, proactive measures against discrimination and foster truly inclusive environments.
ALLYSHIP MATTERS
Corporate allyship is no longer just a trend; it’s a crucial factor in talent retention. A notable 80% of LGBTQ+ Gen Zers say they would hesitate to join companies that have recently withdrawn their support for the LGBTQ+ community. Employers must show unwavering support for LGBTQ+ issues, both publicly and internally, to attract and retain this key demographic.
When employees see their organization making a genuine commitment to inclusion, they are more likely to feel a sense of belonging and loyalty. This, in turn, contributes to a healthier corporate culture and stronger retention rates.
TIME TO STEP UP INCLUSION EFFORTS
Gen Z, especially those who identify as LGBTQ+, is defining a new era of workplace inclusivity. With nearly one-third of students and graduates identifying as LGBTQ+, companies must step up their inclusion efforts if they hope to attract and retain top talent.
Investing in visible LGBTQ+ representation, cultivating an open and accepting culture, and embracing true corporate allyship are not just beneficial – they are essential strategies in today’s competitive recruitment landscape. As Adrien and Pierre Gaubert, co-founders of myGwork, explain, “Companies that commit to visible representation and authentic environments will not only improve their corporate culture but will also gain a competitive edge in recruitment.”
