The former Chancellor of Exchequer, Rishi Sunak has become the UK’s first Hindu Prime Minister of colour today.
He’s also the youngest PM since 1812. He was named as the next leader of the ruling Conservative Party during Diwali, the festival of lights celebrated by millions of Hindus, Sikhs and Jains across the world.
Sunak was announced leader of the Conservative Party at 2pm BST yesterday on 24 October 2022 when Graham Brady announced the results of the selection process. He was Chancellor of the Exchequer from 2020 to 2022 and Chief Secretary to the Treasury from 2019 to 2020. He has been a Member of Parliament for Richmond (Yorks) and a member of the Conservative Party since 2015.
Although there has been a marked increase in politicians of colour being appointed to senior cabinet roles, including the key posts of chancellor, home secretary and foreign secretary, the UK has never had a black or brown prime minister before.
