This week from 21-27 March 2022 we observe Neurodiversity Celebration Week.
The worldwide initiative challenges stereotypes and misconceptions about neurological differences. It aims to transform how neurodivergent individuals are perceived and supported by providing schools, universities, and organisations with the opportunity to recognise the many talents and advantages of being neurodivergent; while creating more inclusive and equitable cultures that celebrate differences and empower every individual.
The initiative’s founder Siena Castellon started Neurodiversity Celebration Week in 2018 because she wanted to change the way learning differences are perceived. “As a teenager who is autistic and has ADHD, dyslexia, and dyspraxia, my experience has been that people often focus on the challenges of neurological diversity. I wanted to change the narrative; and create a balanced view which focuses equally on our talents and strengths.” Find out how you can get involved here.
NEURODIVERSITY AT WORK
A recent survey carried out by the Institute of Leadership & Management revealed that half of UK’s employers admit that they would not employ someone who had one or more neurodivergent condition. Another study from Public Health England show that 94.4% working-age adults with learning disabilities are without paid jobs nationwide.
However, there are huge benefits of hiring neurodiverse talent in tech. It’s a business opportunity that should not be overlooked, according to many experts. Here’s how you can embrace and nurture neurodiversity to gain a competitive advantage. Of course, effective communication is key for neurodiverse staff. Here’s some great advice on how to adapt your communication style to support neurodiversity at work; and improve the workplace experience for all.
