“Increasing women’s representation at all levels, especially in leadership, is a top priority in 2021,” confirmed Tesla as its first Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Report, reveals an overwhelmingly male workforce.

The report, published on Friday, reveals that 79% its US workforce is male. In addition, 83% of its leadership is male, and 59% of those roles belong to White men, compared to just 17% of women who hold director/vice president roles. The electric car maker, run by Elon musk, said it is taking “active steps to recruit more women”.

POOR FEMALE REPRESENTATION

Overall, women currently represent just 21% of the company’s US workforce and 23% of all promotions – a 5% increase from last year, confirmed Tesla. “While women are historically underrepresented in the tech and automotive industries, we recognise we have work to do in this area,” admitted the company. “We are committed to working alongside companies in these industries to make improvements.”

The company said it is also taking active steps to increase its outreach to women, and build an inclusive culture that supports their development and retention.

RACIAL DIVERSITY STATISTICS

Racial diversity at the top positions also needs to improve, as Black/African American & Hispanics only hold 4% leadership roles each, compared to 59% White and 25% Asian staff.

Although, the company is generally better at hiring diversity at entry levels, Black and African American employees still only represent 10% of the company’s US workforce, compared to 34% White, 22% Hispanic and 21% Asian employees. Going forwards, Tesla said it will recruit from historically Black colleges and universities, and conduct unconscious bias training/programmes for managers and recruiters.
