Today, on 1st December 2019, we observe World AIDS Day. It’s an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, to show support for people living with HIV, and to commemorate those who have died from an AIDS-related illness. Founded in 1988, World AIDS Day was the first-ever global health day.

Marking World AIDS Day can be a great way for corporate and public organisations to show their commitment to equality and diversity, demonstrating to their customers/clients/employees that they are an inclusive business that strives to be supportive of people living with HIV. But it’s also vital that organisations do their bit to remove HIV stigma in the workplace, particularly through education.

The World AIDS Day website encourages organisations to use its materials to help raise awareness and vital funds.

VITAL STATISTICS

Globally, there are an estimated 36.7 million people living with HIV, according to the World AIDS Day organisation. More than 35 million people have died of HIV or AIDS, making it one of the most destructive pandemics in history. Many people still don’t know the facts about how to protect themselves and others, and stigma and discrimination remain a reality for people living with the condition. They are also more likely to experience poverty, hardship and inequalities.

Both organisations and individuals are encouraged to get involved in this year’s #ROCKTHERIBBON campaign, by wearing the red ribbon, donating or attending a World AIDS Day event near you. Click here for more information.
