This week we observe and celebrate Transgender Awareness Week (13th to 19th November 2019).

Throughout the week, individuals and organisations participate in events and activities aimed at raising the visibility of transgender and gender non-conforming people. It also aims to raise awareness and address the issues this community faces, such as prejudice, discrimination and violence.

Transgender Awareness Week takes place during the week prior to Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR), held on 20th November, an annual observance that honours the memory of the transgender people whose lives were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence.

TDOR was founded by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith, as a vigil to honour the memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was killed in 1998. The vigil commemorated all the transgender people lost to violence that year, and what began as an important memorial has since become the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance.
