This year’s World Tolerance Summit, scheduled to take place on 13th-14th November 2019 in Dubai, will focus on Tolerance in Multiculturalism: Achieving the Social, Economic and Humane Benefits of a Tolerant World.
The Summit, organised by the UAE’s International Institute For Tolerance, under the patronage of Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, also aims to promote the UAE as the ‘global capital for tolerance’. The event will provide the opportunity to highlight the efforts made by the UAE to promote tolerance, and strengthen its stance to be a ‘model for tolerance and positive coexistence, and the catalyst to build greater understanding between cultures’.
According to the organiser, it’s the largest gathering for leaders in the peace-keeping space, and will be attended by the world’s government leaders, peace experts, academics, specialists, social workers, envoys from the international diplomatic community, international associations and organisations, as well as university students.
2019 YEAR OF TOLERANCE
The Summit coincides with UAE’s 2019 Year of Tolerance. UAE President, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyanm, declared 2019 as the Year of Tolerance, as a tribute to the values of tolerance and co-existence by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Founding Father of the UAE.
According to H.E. Dr. Hamad Al Shaikh Ahmad Al Shaibani, Managing Director of the International Institute for Tolerance, and Chairman of the Higher Committee of the World Tolerance Summit, “The event is an important platform for discussing and coming up with unified ideas to enhance the protection of societies, especially young people, stressing that the family and the educational institutions are one of the keys to peaceful coexistence and tolerance.”
SUMMIT GOALS
One of the event’s main objectives is to forge local, regional and international dialogues and partnerships to help the UAE achieve its goal of becoming the global capital for tolerance. Its other goals include:
- Spreading UAE’s message of tolerance in multiculturalism through local and international campaigns in traditional media, as well as through various social media platforms.
- Creating a culture of tolerance at every workplace where all employees can feel safe, and where everyone is offered equal employment opportunity.
- Becoming a platform to promote the values of tolerance among communities and families.
- Safeguarding and promoting the principles of tolerance in the country’s educational system, comprising schools, universities and other educational institutions.
