Today, on 8th October 2019 we celebrate Ada Lovelace Day.  It is an international celebration of the achievements of inspiring and intelligent women who have made great strides in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).

Great historical examples include Lady Ada Lovelace herself, who was the first programmer, and Marie Curie who was not only the first woman to win a Nobel prize, but is the only person ever to win two Nobel prizes in different sciences.

Ada Lovelace Day aims to increase the profile of women in STEM and, in doing so, create new role models who will encourage more girls into STEM careers and support women already working in STEM.

Founded in 2009 by Suw Charman-Anderson, it is held every year on the second Tuesday of October. People around the world now organise events to celebrate women in STEM, such as Ada Lovelace Live.
